Short Documentary: Traces

Short Documentary: Traces

Traces explores themes of memory, spirituality, public health and safety among urban poor in the Philippines through a a dialogue between two documentary short films, shot three years apart.

In 2013, Makati City’s South Cemetery was home to dozens of families until, following a recent crime series, authorities evicted the entire living population of the cemetery. Julie and Primo and their three children, cemetery-dwellers, tried to make ends meet as parking assistants at a local church. Living on the streets, they faced the constant struggle of keeping their young family intact and healthy. Three years later, I found Julie and Primo again.

Traces puts excerpts from my first short documentary Crowded Healing in opposition with material shot three years later, and deals with a tragedy that had struck Julie and Primo in an intimate and personal way.
